OV-Chipkaart

OV Chipkaart Trans Link Systems and the suppliers for the Dutch e-ticketing system have opened up the specifications.

When the OV-Chipkaart was contracted, Trans Link Systems and its suppliers agreed that the functional and interface specifications for the system would be made available for all interested parties, through the TLS SDOA (system documentation open architecture).

With the SDOA, transport operators are free to choose their supplier. The correct implementation of the SDOA ensures that the transport operators and their suppliers use equipment that is fully interoperable with equipment of other operators and suppliers.

Key properties of the current SDOA:

  •     Contactless technology (Mifare Classic, ISO 14443-A)
  •     Customer oriented fare collection
        o E-tickets
        o E-purse
        o Loyalty
        o Auto reload of E-purse
  •     Secure transactions
  •     Low transaction time
  •     Minimal scope for flexibility with ensured interoperability
  •     Five tier architecture
o Level 0: Contactless fare media.
o Level 1: Reading equipment, such as gates, point of sales, validators, portable units
o Level 2: Station Processing Systems, such as a bus depot
o Level 3: Operator back office systems
o Level 4: Central back office with support for clearing and settlement for full interoperability

New technology:

Following the security breach of the Mifare Classic technology, TLS and the Dutch public transport sector have agreed a migration plan. The Open Ticketing Institute works together with TLS to develop the new technology. The program is financially supported by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. The findings will be made publicly available.
